Abstract: This paper explores how both governmental regulations and voluntary standards contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on formal standard-setting within the European Union. A survey of over 1,000 standardization stakeholders highlights that formal standards, especially harmonized European standards linked to laws, are perceived as key drivers for achieving the SDGs. The findings suggest that formal standardization can complement existing sustainability standards and engage economic actors in advancing concrete measures for sustainable development.
