Pakistan adheres to Hong Kong Convention of the IMO for ship recycling

Author: anave.es

Abstract: On November 30, 2023, Pakistan became the latest major ship recycling power to join the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC), following Bangladesh, India, and Turkey. Together, these four countries handle about 95% of global ship recycling. Under the HKC, ships sent for recycling must have an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), and recycling facilities must submit specific scrapping plans. BIMCO highlights the significant investments made by non-OECD recycling countries to meet HKC standards and urges recognition of their progress by the EU and Basel Convention states.
